An atomic clock is the most accurate timekeeping device in the world, measuring time by tracking the incredibly stable resonant frequencies of atoms. Unlike mechanical clocks that rely on pendulums, or digital clocks that rely on quartz crystals, atomic clocks use the quantum jumps of electrons (or the vibrations of atomic nuclei) to define the length of a second.
