Pond phytoplankton are microscopic, single-celled photosynthetic organisms (algae and cyanobacteria) that drift near the water surface and serve as the foundation of the pond's food web. They convert sunlight and nutrients into organic biomass, giving healthy ponds their characteristic green "bloom".
